Japan

I took my first overseas trip in 2017 at the age of 56. The losses I experienced when I was young shaped my need for a sense of control, which manifested as a fear of flying, so I did not travel by air much as a young mother. Once my three children were grown and out of the nest, and having gained a wonderful partner after a painful divorce, I was ready to loosen the reins and see some of the world. My oldest daughter and her husband were wrapping up a six-month adventure throughout Asia, and we met up and spent the final two weeks traveling with them in Japan, visiting Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Naoshima, and Osaka.

Japan's unique culture is an amazing blend of ancient traditions and modern influences, reflected in its art, cuisine, and societal norms. The country's deep-rooted respect for nature is evident in its temples, gardens, and festivals. As a painter, Japan offered a vast array of colors and textures to observe and document. These images have become a tremendously valuable resource for my work.
